Away from its bustling hot-spots, experience the slower, quieter side of Bali at Tanah Lot, an ancient Balinese-Hindu temple located off the coast.

Picture yourself at a centuries-old Balinese pura or temple perched high on a coral rock outcropping separated from the mainland in Bali, facing the wide open ocean. The waves are crashing below, while the dramatic sky is changing colour with every passing moment as the setting sun slowly melts away! Tanah Lot is purposefully laidback and eternally tranquil.

What is Tanah Lot?

Located in Tabanan, merely 30 km away from Denpasar, Pura Tanah Lot translates to ‘the land in the sea’, perfectly fitting for its unique offshore settings. It is believed to date back to the 16th century by Dang Hyang Nirartha, a respected religious figure in the region.

It is said that each of the sea temples in Bali was intended to be within sight of the next, so they formed a chain along its southwestern coast. From Pura Tanah Lot, hence, you can see the clifftop site of Pura Ulu Watu far to the south, and the long sweep of seashore west to Perancak, near Negara.

Today, the picturesque silhouette of Pura Tanah Lot at sunset is one of the most popular iconic features of Bali. The ancient Balinese-Hindu temple is dedicated to Bhatara Segara or the gods of the sea. The active sacred site attracts local worshippers who spend time inside the temple — which tourists aren’t allowed to access.

But venture beyond, and you will find the palm-studded hinterland of Tabanan delightfully quiet. Visit one of the volcanic beaches, sip on fresh coconuts, and take in the pristine scenery. You can even plan a visit around the festival of Odalan, which is celebrated every 210 days. On this day, you will see rows of Balinese women clad in traditional outfits, singing and gracefully carrying offerings on their head to pray at the temple.
