The Underline is transforming the land below Miami’s Metrorail into a 16-km linear park, urban trail, and public art destination.

Along the same line of The Highline in New York City or Camden Highline in London, Miaimi has come up with the idea of The Underline — a 120-acre multi-purpose and multi-use pathway with ample green space and public art running through its very heart. The 16-km pathway has been designed to run from Brickell Station in Downtown Miami to the Dadeland South Station.
Phase 1 of this linear park under the city’s Metrorail tracks was opened in February 2021. The almost a kilometre long stretch called Brickell Backyard from Miami River to SW 13th Street.

It features the River Room with separate walking and biking paths safe for evening strolls and bike rides; Urban Gym with exercise stations, a running track, and courts for basketball and soccer; a Promenade with a 700-square-foot stage; and the Oolite Room with four butterfly gardens (out of 20 planned ones in total) along with a number of public artworks. In its initial year, the park hosted over 50 free community programs and was visited by more than a millions guests and thousands of butterflies born among its 30,000 native plants and trees!

Phase 2 is scheduled to open in the summer of 2023. The 3.14-km stretch from SW 13th Street to SW 19th Avenue will most notably feature The Underline’s first playground and bioswales, green infrastructure, and underground drainage systems, as well as 10,000 more native plants and species, additional public art, community programming, and rest areas. Free WiFi will be available at Vizcaya and Simpson Park Playground areas.

Phase 3 — from SW 19th Avenue to Dadeland South Station — will be the longest by far at 11.2 km! The Underline will feature an end-to-end outdoor art gallery. Aligning with the destination’s core values of inclusivity, connectivity, and fun, the public art program will include privately and publicly-funded temporary and permanent artworks from established and emerging local and international artists alike.
