Following an impressive excavation project, Claridge’s in Mayfair has opened the doors to its new spa, featuring the hotel’s first swimming pool.
Set in the heart of Mayfair, Claridge’s has excelled at glamorous design, inspiring dining, and impeccable service since the 1850s. Now, the iconic art deco hotel has launched its first ever spa. The brand new subterranean spa retreat is a part of the upmarket London hotel’s seven-year property-wide overhaul.
Claridge’s Spa has been designed by interior architect Andre Fu, who was inspired by traditional Japanese temples and Zen gardens in Kyoto. Spanning 7,000 square feet, the spa is incorporated with natural elements such as limestone, wood, and water into the interiors to create a natural calming atmosphere.
Set three storeys below the Mayfair hotel ground, the spa is an expansive yet intimate space boasting seven treatment rooms, steam and sauna rooms, and the hotel’s first pool. The heated swimming pool, framed by a multi-vaulted ceiling and stone columns with private cabanas set back from the water, is the perfect place to unwind.
The spa menu pays homage to the art of ceremony in Japanese culture through the incorporation of calming opening and closing rituals during each treatment. In keeping with the five-star service the hotel is known for, the spa will offer a range of bespoke treatments inspired by the concept of omakase — leaving another to decide what is best — so the guests are pampered like never before.
Guests will be welcomed into Claridge’s Spa with the presentation of kimonos, before taking part in a welcoming foot ceremony to wash away the outside world. Inspired by the traditional practices of temple Koh-do, they will be offered a choice of incense pre-treatment to help clear the mind and aid with relaxation, while the end of treatments will be signalled by the sound of ringing bells.
Claridge’s is owned and managed by Maybourne Hotel Group, and Facegym founder Inge Theron is its creative director of spa and holistic wellness. Theron said, “We have created a spa at Claridge’s where guests will find both holistic practices and results-driven high-tech all under one roof. Claridge’s has long been a temple of good living with a philosophy of enjoying life to the full, and so now, we can also rejuvenate and restore with the perfect treatment, to strike that all important balance.”
Resident brands include Josh Wood, Augustinus Bader, and FaceGym, alongside a roster of visiting wellness experts. French tip manicures will be done by popular Instagram nail artist Harriet Westmoreland, while acupuncturist Ross J Barr will offer various sessions, including a “psychological MOT”.
