June — the official month of Pride — is when most parades across the globe are held, to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City. Today, major international cities like NYC, Paris, Sydney, and San Francisco, come alive in June with colour-popping, jaw-dropping street festivities to honour the movement that led to a paradigm shift for gay rights. New York City, US
No other place celebrates Pride like New York City, given its historic links to the gay rights movement as the Stonewall riots of 1969. Defined in 30 days, 50+ events, and over three million people, the NYC Pride March is a grand annual event with several celebrations held on city streets and in parks, theaters, museums, and clubs. Heritage of Pride is the non-profit organisation that plans and produces NYC’s official Pride events each year. With rainbow-festooned floats manned by go-go dancers, dance-all-night music festivals, and history movie nights, the march starts at 26th Street & 5th Ave and ends at 23rd Street & 7th Ave.

Count on Aussies to always party in style and begin your Pride Month in Sydney. Plan your trip in June for a month full of celebrations at Sydney Pride Festival. Expect everything extravagant, right from the White Parties to trans-glamour fashion shows and exclusive art screenings. The festival is dedicated to the first Mardi Gras that was held on June 24, 1978 as a night-time celebration followed by a protest march to end discrimination against homosexuals and remember Stonewall riots. Think LGBTQIA+ arts, cinema, trivia, debates, sports, and fundraising activities.

Madrid is a city open to everyone with a broad multi-ethnic and cultural character. Its MADO Madrid Orgullo, the biggest European Pride festival, is the epicentre of the LGBTQIA+ movement in entire Spain, which has been hosting Pride parades since 1977. Arrive in the Chueca neighbourhood to party with renowned DJs and drag queens! The annual Pride parade celebrates the community with spectacular floats from Atocha Station to Plaza de Colon, open-air concerts, parties, art and cultural events, in the heart of the capital.

You’ll be surprised on how loud and yet well-attended and respectful Mexico city’s annual Pride parade is! A sheer reflection of the diversity, relative safety, and freedom enjoyed by the LGBTQIA+ residents of the city, Mexico City Gay Pride truly is one of the largest, wildest gay Pride events in Latin America. Marcha del Orgullo LGBT de la Ciudad de México, as it is locally called, brings over one million people to the streets of the capital brimming with celebrations. The parade departs from the soaring El Ángel de la Independencia victory column in Zona Rosa, and continues all the way to the city’s iconic Zocalo, followed by a massive all-nighter party!

Paris is the definition of romance. And it certainly doesn’t discriminate on whom to and whom not to love. Head straight to Le Marais, the city’s gay district, for a week of non-stop parties that wraps up with one big event: Marche des Fiertés LGBTQ i.e. Paris Gay Pride Parade. A historic event born in the 80’s in the lovely French capital, the dreamy march starts at Place de la Concorde and winds its way through Châtelet, Le Marais, Pont de Sully, and Bastille, before finally concluding at Place de la République. What’s more? This year, Disneyland Paris is throwing a Magical Pride celebration in June 2022!

Marking the 50th anniversary of the first Pride celebration in the UK, Pride in London is run by a non-profit group of volunteers passionate about equality and diversity. Its annual parade takes you through the heart of the West End. Be ready for incredible two weeks of a colourful carnival and an amazing Pride weekend, designed to offer the community a platform to be seen and to be heard. The parade kicks off at Portland Place, covering Oxford Circus, Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus, Pall Mall, and Trafalgar Square, before finally finishing on White Hall. Watch out for the popular Pride’s Got Talent competition!

Europe’s most queer-friendly city, Berlin hosts the famous Christopher Street Day Pride Parade in front of the Victory Column. Running successfully since 1979, the event is a LGBTQIA+ landmark that attracts over a million people each year. From club nights in Kreuzberg to queer film screenings across the city, this one hosts some of the largest festivities. The Dyke March and Pride boat afterparties are also must-do.

Tel Aviv, Israel
Popular as the queer capital of the Middle East, Tel Aviv celebrates Israel’s LGBTQIA+ community with Tel Aviv Gay Pride week during the Pride Month. The week-long festivities recognises the city’s diverse multicultural influences. Tourists and locals alike flood the streets and gather for a march, followed by a huge fair. The parade launches at noon from Ben Tsiyon and rolls out late into the evening with DJ performances, lip-smacking food stands, arts, and colourful Pride merch, finally wrapping up at the Charles Clore Garden. The event ends with amazing live shows and bar set-ups against one of the city’s blue beaches.
