Every winter, temperatures in the Siberian city of Yakutsk, widely identified as the coldest on the planet, plunge to brutal lows.
Some 8,388 km east of Moscow in the Russian Far East, there’s a tiny hamlet where local residents regularly see the mercury drop well below -40° Celsius. Life in Yakutsk, known to be the world’s coldest city, becomes brutal every winter, as it is situated on the Northern Hemisphere’s most southern border where land is covered by continuous permafrost or glacial ice.
