Laddus are quintessential to Diwali celebrations, but how about making them wholesome and nutrient rich? Try this recipe by Chef Surabhi Sehgal to satisfy your desserts craving!

This Wholesome Laddu recipe is adapted from Chef Surabhi Sehgal aka @SuPaintsOnPlate‘s grandmother who would fill multiple jars with these in winter. She would guard them diligently so that they lasted all season. When Sehgal decided to make them a few years ago, she added a few extra ingredients including flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts etc to add more nutrients to this already healthy recipe.

These laddus are not overly sweet or heavy and are made with healthy and nourishing ingredients. They make for the perfect guilt-free yet indulgent treat during festivities.
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 cup chickpea flour (besan)
- 4 tbsp finely chopped almonds
- 4 tbsp finely chopped walnuts
- 4 tbsp chopped raisins
- 2 tbsp finely chopped pistachios
- 4 tbsp flaxseed powder
- 2 tbsp powdered chia seeds
- 3/4 cup Ghee
- 3/4 cup powdered jaggery (or to taste)
- 1/2 tsp powdered cardamom
- 1/4 tsp saffron
Method
- Add chopped almonds, pistachios, and walnuts to a pan. Dry roast for few minutes on low heat and let them cool.
- To a hot pan, add ghee, whole wheat flour and chickpea flour and cook it on slow flame. Keep stirring it for 15 – 20 minutes.
- Once you get the nutty aroma of ghee and cooked flour, and the colour of the flour turns light brown, transfer to a large mixing bowl and add jaggery, nuts, raisins, cardamom, flaxseed powder, chia powder, and saffron.
- Once the mixture has cooled a bit, shape them into small balls.
- Once completely cooled, store in an airtight container.
