TD Travelista: Planning your wardrobe for a destination wedding

Since the wedding season is on in full swing, this month’s fashion column equips you with all you need when deciding what to wear to a destination do.

After two years of attending virtual and micro weddings, you have finally received an invite to a destination wedding! While it is the most awaited event of the wedding season, planning your outfits for one can sometimes pose a dilemma.

Are your looks apt for the wedding’s location and theme? What sort of footwear and accessories would work best? Should you carry only on-trend pieces or add a traditional option just to be on the safe side? What to take along and what to skip is the biggest question on your mind. Packing your destination wedding wardrobe can be a time-consuming and cumbersome task.

Now, before you start planning your outfits for the destination wedding,
keep these three key elements in mind. Once you have figured out these, you will know exactly what to take along with you and what to keep back.

The location:

This is of utmost importance. You need to know if it is a
domestic or international location. Is it by the ocean or up in the
mountains? Will you be traveling by road or by air?

The weather:

What sort of weather and season is the wedding taking
place in? Is it cold and chilly or hot and humid? Is the wedding an indoor
affair or outdoor soirée?

The vibe:

What is the mood of the wedding? Is this a grand extravaganza or
a low-key private event? Will it be a traditional ceremony in a place of
worship or a civil union?

Pro tip:

When it comes to destination weddings, there is a risk of overpacking. To avoid that, carry pieces that can be styled differently for multiple occasions. This is the perfect opportunity to break up coordinated sets and mix, match, and layer. Not only do you get to show off your styling skills, but you also get to keep your luggage weight in check. Win-win!

To ease your packing stress and let you enjoy the festivities in style, we have created a special guide that will make sure you carry just the right pieces and avoid any unnecessary extra luggage…

Hill Station Wedding

Be it Mussoorie or Munnar, hill station weddings are all about snow-capped mountains, lush greenery, and picturesque scenery. The crisp fresh air tends to be a tad nippy, making it the ideal location for you to layer your outfit and flaunt your velvet beauties, Banarsi silks, and cashmere pieces.

Day:

The weather during the day is pleasant and doesn’t necessarily need too much layering. For an afternoon Haldi ceremony, wear a lehenga set with a traditional choker and later get rid of the choker and add a cape jacket, stud earrings and a vibrant lipstick shade for the evening mehendi party. You get yourself a fresh look without changing your entire outfit.

Night:

The night-time weather is on the cooler side giving you the perfect opportunity to layer your outfit and mix current styles with classic silhouettes. Add a long zardozi embroidered jacket on top of a delicately embellished saree and complete the look with a diamond bracelet and retro-inspired smokey eye makeup. This pairing gives you an opportunity to look great as well as stay warm all through the wedding ceremony and reception.

In case you prefer something more fusion and modern, opt for a trendy tunic and pair it with dhoti pants. Style an embroidered pashmina shawl as a dupatta, add chunky anklets, and polish the look off with a sleek clutch bag.

Palace Wedding

The go-to destination for high-profile weddings, a palace is the perfect location to create your very own wardrobe fairytale. Whether you are headed to one at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur or the Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad, the royal grandeur and majestic beauty of these palaces is the ideal destination to wear your rich heirloom pieces, luxe designer outfits, and couture gowns.

Day:

The one place where you can wear a head-to-toe embroidered ensemble or a pure silk Jamawar saree during the day is at a wedding. For dancing in the baraat, pair a vintage hand-embroidered saree with a sheer back blouse, Polki jewelry, and mid-heel sandals.

With a few additions and subtractions, you can repeat the same saree for the evening reception but in an all-new look. Swap the sheer back blouse with an off-shoulder top, add a belt, and complete the look with statement earrings and shimmery eye makeup.

Night:

For those who like to experiment with their look, try out a floor-length embroidered jacket with a bralette blouse and palazzo pants for the sangeet ceremony. Carry the same pieces for cocktail party later by ditching the jacket and adding a stone-encrusted necklace instead. For the wedding reception, give a regal spin to your classic designer lehenga set by draping the dupatta as a cape. The royal-inspired ensemble will keep your hand free and let you enjoy the festivities like a queen.

If you love a beach vacation, we promise you, you are going to love a beach wedding even more. The crystal-clear azure seawater makes a beautiful backdrop, while pristine white sand tickles your toes. The sunny skies, and the balmy saltwater-tinged breeze give your skin a delicate glow.

Whether it happens close to home in Goa or on the international shore of Maldives, a beach wedding has plenty for you to be excited about. Since the weather is hot and humid, this is one wedding where less is more, and you can pair some of your fave beachwear pieces with your festive ones.

Day: A floral set, featuring a skirt and ruffled blouse, is ideal for an afternoon mehendi party. If the function is on the beach, wear flat sandals and make sure to apply water-resistant makeup. Wear the same skirt with a corset-style crop top and a statement necklace for a sundowner by the poolside. Trade the flat sandals with sexy stilettoes.

In a mood for something more ethnic? Choose a pastel chikankari sharara set and pair it with metallic sandals, a cuff bracelet, and dangler earrings.

Night:

When it comes to destination weddings, a pre-constructed saree is a great alternative to the traditional six yards and takes care of any draping difficulty.

A saree-gown paired with a sequined bralette lets you wear an ethnic silhouette with a modern twist. Add a delicate bracelet, soft curls, and stilettoes and you are ready for your pre-wedding cocktail dinner party.

While you can’t go wrong in traditional colours, for a fresh look, try and incorporate neon pieces along with outfits. The vibrant colours work very well amidst the playful vibe of the beach wedding and they look stunning in pictures too.
