Only a counted few have walked on the moon, while the whole seven-billion population shares the dream of landing on the celestial sphere someday. Dubai is, however, done waiting and is getting its own ‘moon’. Or rather, a more luxurious version of the same.
Moon World Resorts, a Canadian architectural company, has proposed to build a massive moon-shaped destination resort in Dubai that will offer its guests a luxury space tourism experience on the ground. The emirate is known for its supersized buildings and luxury resorts. With the new concept having a capacity to handle 10 million annual visitors, we can see why the two might be a good match.

A luxury lunar complex, Moon Dubai will stand 735-feet tall, cost USD5 billion (over INR 39,838 crore), and be built within 48 months. The latest upcoming themed hotel on the block, the property is expected to bring 2.5 million (25 lakh) guests annually and give a further boost to the city’s economy, believes Michael R Henderson, cofounder at Moon World Resorts Inc.
Sprawling over 10 acres of land, the property will feature hotel rooms, a wellness centre, a nightclub, and 300 private residences called Sky Villas. Moon Dubai will stay surrounded by a ‘lunar surface’, and will include a lunar colony, too, allowing easy exploration to the ones looking for affordable access to space tourism. Owners of the Sky Villas will also become members of an exclusive private club at the resort.
However, there are currently no concrete plans for the resort to open in Dubai, according to Henderson. The company is still trying to procure licenses and planning road shows to promote the Moon resort to the potential clients in North America, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia.
“Currently, MWR is planning a 2023 global road-show series showcasing Moon to potential regional licensees. One such show will take place in the MENA region, potentially Dubai, UAE, with other options including KSA, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait,” Henderson told Arabian Business.
Only after the regional license is procured, the exact location will be finalised, followed by a one-year pre-development program and later, a four-year build-out program, he added. MWR is expected to licence four Moon destination resorts around the globe — one each in North America, Europe, MENA and Asia. Well, wherever it lands the Moon is certainly the next chapter in unique destinations resorts!
