Kolkata is a city unabashedly in love with good food at all times, but come the Pujas and the gourmet scene goes into hyperdrive. Here are some of the tastiest options this festive season

To keep up with the tradition, OCTA has introduced some quintessential Bengali delicacies that are perfect for the occasion. The menu consists of fish fry, dimer devil, gondhoraj mustard chicken. Vegetarians can also find an array of dishes like singara, vegetable chop and paneer pantheras.

A Bengali feast on silver platters awaits you at Taj Bengal’s Sonargaon restaurant, which is offering veg, non-veg, fish and seafood thali options. There’s a delectable array of dishes on offer, from gondhoraj lebu ghol to fish cutlet, ilish doi posto, randhuni murgi, gota moshlar khashir mangsho, potoler dorma, daaler kochuri and kaancha aamer chatni. Of course, there’s bhapa mishti doi to finish.

Being served at the Ballroom at The Oberoi Grand, the Pujor mahabhoj has over 50 dishes on offer, showcasing the diversity opf Bengal’s culinary offerings. Many favourites are expected, like chingri malai curry, kosha mangsho, pabdar macher jhal, bhetki paturi and so on.

Comfort food doesn’t get better than this. The menu includes Pujo special thalis which let one savour the flavours of Bengal with eternal favourites like luchi, cholar dal, chanar dalna, beguni, egg devil, phulkopir roast, basanti pulao, with a side of chicken, fish followed by chutney, mishti doi, ice cream, papad and salad. The other items on the menu are mochar chop, koraisutir seekh and gondhoraj chanar paturi in vegetarian and fish fry, dhakai chicken seekh, chicken cutlet in non-vegetarian. Monkey Bar offers a twist to comforting local gems with the festive menu such as beguni chaat (crisp batter-fried slices of eggplant, topped with green and red chutney, aloo lachha, coriander and pomegranate) and kosha mangsho kathi roll (slow-cooked lamb with Indian whole spices, wrapped in a flaky porota and served with onion raita). Another gem on the menu is the bhetki bhaatey (mustard-marinated Bhetki fish, buried in a pillow of Gobindobhog rice and steamed in banana parcels). The Fatty Bao swings further east to give diners an undiluted dose of their festive favourite Indo-Chinese dishes including Chinese bhel made with fried Hakka noodles, assorted vegetables, coriander, peanuts, sriracha, light soy, spring onion, tamarind, green apple and toasted sesame, the dragon chicken (deep-fried chicken marinated with egg, red chili, dark soy, tossed with cashew, garlic, sriracha sauce and fried basil) and the steamed sausage fried rice (pork sausage, fried egg, asparagus, tossed in a chilli bean paste, fried garlic and scallion).

Some of the signatures on the special Pujo menu are mochar badami kebab, posto deya cholar daler bora, moong daler jhal pitha, pur bhora bhetki bora, chingri macher bora, narkeli cholar dal, dhonepata deya kosha aloor dum, chanar dalna, phulkopir malai curry, bhetki macher paturi, galda chingrir gorgora, and polashi pathar mangsho. These can be savoured with koraisutir kochuri, phulko luchi, gobindobhog chaler bhat and basanti pulao. On offer are also desserts like gur sandesh soufflé and mishti doi cannoli. 

The beverage menu offers a selection of refreshing cocktails infused with local ingredients like  Bengal Princess (rum and guava), East India Old Fashioned (jaggery and cinnamon fusion), Pomelo & Pomegranate Margarita (fresh fruit juices with gondhoraj lebu) and Floral Gin & Tonic (flavoured with Aparajita and elderflower).

The Durga Puja Mahabhoj will be laid out at the Grand Ballroom on Saptami, Ashtami & Navami (12-14, October 2021) from 12pm to 3.30pm. The wide range of freshly cooked, authentic Bengali food includes gondhoraj fish tikka, echorer dalna, aam kasundi paneer, pulao, posto murgi, mutton roganjosh, dhokar dalna and more. The Puja Mahabhoj will be accompanied by Baul sangeet, abriti, dhaaki, dhunuchi and Puja parikrama.

At JW Kitchen, the menu will range from Indian to Continental and Asian, including dishes like stir fry Asian greens, murgh tariwala, chingri maachher malai curry, sorshe maachh, Kolkata chicken biryani and ghee bhaat. The spread will be available from Shashti to Navami (11-14, October 2021) for lunch and dinner. Tarditonal Bengali desserts like rosh mallai, sandesh, roshogulla and mishti doi will also be in attendance. 

Meanwhile, the signature Pan-Asian restaurant, Vintage Asia will be offering a Puja special a la carte menu from Shashti to Navami (11-14, October 2021), to resonate with the sharodiya feels.

Apart from this, a group of 8-10 people can book personalised venues for a selectively curated Durga Puja feast at Rs 4,499 AI, and avail a Bengali Thali along with soft beverages.
