The focal point of all major attractions in Kashmir’s Srinagar, Dal Lake is about to get even more tourist friendly! The government has announced the development of five new tourist villages — Kachri Mohalla, Sofi Mohalla, Tinda Mohallah, Akhoon Mohalla, and a vegetable market — at the picturesque lake.

The project is a Mission Youth initiative by the Tourist Villages Development programme in Kashmir, aimed to promote the destination and help strengthen the local rural economy. An extremely popular tourist spot already, the lake will offer locals more opportunities to earn livelihoods with this brand new initiative. Additionally, these new villages will also be promoted as potential film shooting sites.

Offering wholesome rural experiences, each of these villages have their own USPs, and will come with unique homestays and basic facilities for tourists and locals alike. The tourism authority is striving hard to develop these sites in best ways possible, for instance equipping homestays with all amenities and providing local youth with handicraft training and helping them hone their skills that can be put to use. Local handicraft products will even find the perfect market, reaching a wider audience at these tourist villages.

Kashmir has received a record-breaking footfall this season. Brimming with attractions like colourful shikaras (traditional houseboats), Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashmashahi, floating lotus gardens and markets, and more, Dal Lake attracts thousands of visitors every year. The state government is hence keen on further developing it as the ultimate destination to experience the true beauty that is Kashmir. In recent times, it has come up with many unique and interesting experiences like an open-air floating theatre, hot air balloon rides, and more.
