Built on the occasion of the iconic Sabarmati Riverfront completing a decade, Atal Bridge offers a one-of-a-kind pedestrian-only experience.
With a two-level promenade, public parks, manicured lawns, urban forests, water-sports stations, an events ground, a sports plaza, and various ghats along the river’s banks, the Sabarmati Riverfront is already a major attraction in Ahmedabad. Atal Bridge is the latest addition to the iconic site.
The brand-new overpass between the Ellis and Sardar bridges is first-of-its-kind in the country. Atal Bridge is a 300-metre-long, pedestrian-only foot over bridge (FOB) connecting eastern and western ends of the riverfront. Unique in design both technically and visually, it draws inspiration from the celebration of Uttarayan, the popular international kit festival of Gujarat.
It was built using 2,600 metric tonnes of steel pipes, while the roof of the bridge is adorned with colourful fabric and the railing has been built with vibrant coloured glasses and stainless steel, making it aesthetically pleasing. It has a lush flower garden on the western end, and an art and culture centre is coming up on the eastern end.
Ideal for a breezy evening stroll, Atal Bridge offers breathtaking panoramas of the riverfront. Seating arrangements and green shades make it the perfect spot to sit and admire the beauty of the Sabarmati River that gently flows below. Additionally, it provides connectivity to the multi-level car parking and various public development on the either banks from plaza.
This hottest new attraction in Ahmedabad was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 27, following which thousands had rushed to experience the spectacle. An entrance fee of INR30 is now be charged for visitors aged between 12 and 60 years, while INR15 for those between three and 12 years and for those aged above 60 years. There is no fee for persons with disabilities. A maximum time limit of 30 minutes per visitor is allowed.
Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation (SRFDLC) aims to provide Ahmedabad with a meaningful and sustainable waterfront environment along the banks of the eponymous river through a series of urban developments. The Sabarmati Riverfront has been developed keeping the same thing in mind. And Atal Bridge is definitely its most interesting architectural marvel that deserves a visit.
