The band was on a roll and Chenna’s Jazz aficionados turned up in full strength despite the cyclonic weather.
Moving on from Delhi to Chennai, the next phase of TravelDine Jazz Nights opened at the glamorous Leela Palace Chennai on Marina Beach, last night. The hotel’s F&B team not only created a beautiful concert setting in the scarlet-and-gold embellished Spectra, the hotel’s 24-hour restaurant, but also pulled out all the stops with their spectacular seafood buffet spread and a generous bar with Bacardi as the pouring partner for the evening.
The music lovers who attended the event sponsored by ICICI Pru AMC, official timekeeper Rado Watches and destination partner Los Angeles Tourism, had their heart’s content of luxury, food and drink, and the most scintillating set list of Jazz in all its glory.
The very talented Paddy Trio, plus Aniket Chaturvedi on tenor saxophone and Sartak Kalyani on vocals (making it Paddy’s Hot Five) took charge of the stage to provide an evening of superlative Jazz, regaling the audience who had braved the effects of cyclone Mandous this Friday to come and be entranced by the music.
A terrific drum introduction from Bihu Mukherjee took the evening to another plane, heralding the trio’s rendition of Dizzy Gillespie’s popular Latin tune A Night in Tunisia. Saxophonist Aniket joined in with a rousing Moment’s Notice.
Sartak’s voiced Jazz standards such as Fly Me to the Moon, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, and Shiny Stockings from the Count Basie repertoire and later wowed the crowd with Moody’s Mood for Love from the famous solo by saxophonist James Moody.
The Hot Five produced some high-quality jazz with Equinox from Coltrane, Doxy that was made famous by Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins and Ornithology from the unique Charlie Parker.
All in all, it was an evening that blended authentic Afro Cuban jazz, bebop and a sprinkling of popular vocal Jazz standards. There was something to satisfy every Jazz taste and more.
