Meghalaya. Literally the abode of the clouds. One of the ‘seven sister’ states of north-eastern India. A land mostly peopled by the hill tribes called the Khasis, Garos and Jaintias. Where the entwined roots of trees and of tradition connect today’s generation with their ancestors in beautiful ways.
Living roots bridges like this one near Nongriat village in Cherrapunji, are a fascinating feature in Meghalaya, combining artistic form and practical function. They are formed by training tree roots to knit together over years. Image: Shutterstock/Abhijeet Khedgikar.Meghalaya is the wettest place on earth.
