When you think of a grand palace floating on water…
…Jaipur’s Jal Mahal comes to mind first!
It is set in the middle of the picturesque Man Sagar Lake.
The architectural marvel isn't exactly a well-kept secret among tourists.
But did you know that’s not the only water palace in India?
Neermahal stands shimmering on its own boggy island in the heart of Rudra Sagar Lake in Melaghar.
Called Twijilikma Nuyung, the palace was built by the former king, Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, in 1930.
It is a fine epitome of Mughal architectural taste with European and Hindu influences.
It was nine years in the making!
The palace has a total of 24 rooms, with 15 in Andar Mahal, or ‘the royal residence’.
Marble and stone make Neermahal an architectural splendour.
Enjoy leisurely strolls in and around the beautifully manicured gardens.
Or just sit by the lake at the back of the palace, and enjoy the rain.
This is one magical experience you don’t want to miss.
The best time to visit is August, when the three-day eponymous water festival is held.
