Big, urban cities might still be the hot destinations, but travellers in India are looking to explore new bespoke experiences to kick off 2022 with. The travel trend to escape to offbeat beach or nature destinations is dominating the New Year vacation plans this year, as per the data collected by digital travel platform, Agoda. Luxury experiences are also trending.

Capital cities and popular vacation spots continue to top the charts for New Year’s Eve across Asia. In India, Goa has retained its pole position, while Delhi-NCR has surpassed Mumbai to bag the title of second most popular destination in the country. Bengaluru is on the fourth position, while the French town of Puducherry has managed to secure a place in top five this year. Other than that, Chennai, Andamans & Nicobar Islands, Udaipur, Jaipur, and Manali have joined these destinations in this year’s top 10 list.

Looking at the rest of Asia, while Bangkok has returned to Thailand’s number one spot, beach destinations like Bali (Indonesia), Cebu (Philippines), Pattaya (Thailand), Jeju Island (South Korea), and Penang (Malaysia) have made it to the list with partygoers this year. Across different markets, many newcomers have entered the top ten list this time, including coastal destinations like Batam Island (Indonesia), and Kenting (Taiwan). Lush green mountains and scenic destinations including Khao Kho (Thailand), Bohol (the Philippines), and Ninh Binh (Vietnam) have also gained in popularity.

Travellers picking safer, high-end stay options is another dominant trend across most of Asia this year. According to data by Agoda, the demand for four- and five-star hotels has grown even stronger, with Taiwan and Thailand travellers upgrading from one- to 3.5-star accommodation for New Year’s Eve this year, joining Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Vietnam travellers, who continue to choose luxury venues to celebrate the arrival of 2022. In India, however, one- to 3.5-star hotels remain popular among travellers, reflective of the trend in 2020.

“Domestic travel remains the predominant source of business for Asian destinations during this NYE celebration season. Travellers across Asia are showing their ongoing desire to get out, to get away and to escape the constrictions and controls of COVID-impacted regions, venturing into the big cities and the traditional, celebration destinations. The city staycation is booming. Equally the appeal of Asia’s beaches, stunning scenery and freedom of open space has people heading for the coast and mountains in droves. In addition, consumers want luxury. There are great four- and five-star luxury hotel deals available during the COVID recovery,” says Timothy Hughes, Vice President Corporate Development, Agoda.
